Notes on extended liner notes

I've had numerous conversations with fellow songwriters in which it has been broadly agreed that just about the worst thing you can do to a good song is to attempt to explain it. That said, here I go. In my defense, I do often get asked about where some of these images and ideas come from, and since I do put an excessive amount of thought into such things, I might as well put it out there for anyone who really wants to know, for better or for worse. I am however quite concerned that many of you who may very much enjoy what you mean by one of my songs will be horribly disappointed to find out what I meant by it. If you suspect you may be one of these people, I implore you to gracefully excuse yourself while you still can. If you do decide to proceed, do take some comfort in my assurance that I will only address little bits and pieces that happen to interest me at the moment, with no intention of being at all comprehensive. In the end, it is my hope that every quirky detail I pull into a song from my own little life serves to make the song easier for a listener to relate to than if I attempted generality. While the details of my life and thoughts are peculiarly my own, what I feel we all have in common is that our lives flow much more in streams of gritty little details and context-dependent insights than in fuzzy generalities. Our particulars may differ, but we are all, I think, particular.
